Bands: The Latter Day Lizards and The Organic Family Band
Callers: Cis Hinkle and Bob Isaacs celebrate Gypsy Meltdown’s 25th year!
Gypsy Meltdown is Charlotte’s annual contra dance weekend, held each March at Camp Thunderbird. Come enjoy three superb days of dancing to some of the best bands and callers in the country.
THE LATTER DAY LIZARDS
Kate Barnes, Bill Tomczak, Stuart Kenny, Mark “Pokey” Hellenberg and Dave Langford – will reunite us with the cosmic plane through a wide ranging repertoire that includes everything from Irish and Scottish jigs, to Balkan, blues and swing.
THE ORGANIC FAMILY BAND
Jakob and Michael Raitzyk along with Rebekah and Judith Geller – is a family that truly swings. Together they produce hot, fresh, organic contra dance music with a spicy flavor that is all in the family.
Who called at the first Meltdown and has presided over gatherings all over the Southeast and beyond, returns to once again achieve her stated mission – Letium Maximus Funom Meterius (Let’s max out the Fun Meter).
From New Brunswick New Jersey, is a caller par excellence. Famous for his maze squares, a maze of heys, he brings joy to dancers at all levels of experience.
The Saturday Night Crystal Ball
In honor of 25 years of Meltdown, a Silver Birthday and our bond with the Ghyrka Golden Gypsies of Betska-Hersagodancin, the color scheme for Saturday night’s Crystal Ball will be a combination of Silver and Gold. All dance gypsies are invited to wear either silver, gold, crystal – or all three! And if their costumes sparkle, so much the better.
Friday’s POT-LUCK dinner begins at 6:30pm. Bring your favorite food to share! Camp Thunderbird’s catering experts provide the rest of the purchased meals. If you prefer vegetarian fare, make your wishes known on the registration form. Sunday brunch will be served on the back porch of the dance hall overlooking lovely Lake Wylie.
Heated cabins, single beds and togetherness bathrooms with showers are among the many perks of Camp Thunderbird. You will need to bring bedding, towels and soap. Also available are local hotels (South Charlotte, NC. Fort Mill, SC. Rock Hill, SC). Camping is available at McDowell Park (704-588-5224). Remember, no tent or vehicle camping is allowed at Camp Thunderbird.
Registration is limited. A full refund minus $15 is available prior to March 3. We will confirm your registration by e-mail or SASE (self-addressed stamped envelope). Please be sure to send SASE or a clearly written e-mail address for confirmation.
